In WIPERAPP, the verification process is a critical step that follows the data wiping operation to ensure that all data has been securely and permanently erased. After the wiping process is complete, WIPERAPP performs verification by reading all addressable sectors of the drive and comparing their contents with the pattern used during the erasure. In multi-pass wipe-outs with pattern reversal, the verification focuses on the most recently overwritten pattern.
By default, WIPERAPP sets the verification size to 10%, aligning with NIST recommendations. WIPERAPP divides the drive into 1,000 parts and randomly selects at least 2 sectors from each part to confirm that the wiping pattern matches the applied algorithm. This method ensures thorough verification while optimizing time efficiency.
Upon successful verification, WIPERAPP generates a detailed report summarizing the process and saves it in the zero sector of the drive (Master Boot Record - MBR). This report serves as official proof of data wipe, useful for compliance and verification purposes.
